Prestwood Evening Women’s Institute has been ‘inspiring women’ in the village since November 1957. Our members total in excess of 35 ladies of all ages. We are part of the Buckinghamshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, the National Federation of Women’s Institutes and, along with our sister WIs around the country, we make up the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. We don’t sing Jerusalem but we do make jam (well, some of us do!). We also support national campaigns on vital issues, learn about anything and everything from how to keep fit to London in the swinging ‘60s, take trips to places of interest locally and further afield, and we have a lot of fun doing it!
Meetings & Trips
We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.45pm in the Village Hall. Each meeting focuses on a speaker or an event. Over the course of the last year, we’ve enjoyed a talk from a retired Police Officer, learnt about the restoration of Westminster Abbey, learnt how to make candles and have enjoyed a few social evenings just catching up and having a chat.
Each year we arrange an annual trip. Our last trip was to the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton.
Clubs & Groups
Our President, Sue Harris, has recently started a new book club. As a Chartered librarian, Sue is perfectly placed to lead the group. We currently meet once a month.
After various requests from our members, we are also considering starting a new craft group.
Our next meeting will be on 10 March when we’ll be learning about Hughendon Manor during World War II.
We will be holding a Jumble Sale at 2pm on 21 March in the Village Hall.
In 2015, the WI movement will be celebrating its Centenary. The WI Centenary Link Baton has been touring WI Federations across England, Wales and the Islands since January 2014. Between 21 and 28 April it’s passing through Buckinghamshire. The Baton is designed to celebrate the friendship and community that links the WI, with the tour ending at the Organisation’s Annual Meeting in June at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
We are a very friendly bunch of ladies and we’re always on the lookout for new members. Our annual membership fee for 2015 is £36, but if you would like to come along to a meeting as a visitor you are always welcome.
