Forgetmenots2On the first Tuesday of the month, a cheerful and rather sprightly bunch of Prestwood residents gather in the Village Hall for the Forget Me Not Club. The Club was formed in 1961 as a social group for the over 60s and is well attended with a membership in excess of sixty members.

With the exception of January, the Club meets every month. Christine Davy (the Chairman) opens each meeting with a warm welcome, covers the last meeting minutes and updates everyone on the latest news and upcoming events. Entertainment or a talk then follows and recent guests to the Forget Me Not Club have included a puppy and his trainer from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, the Black Dog Band as well as various singers and slide shows. Finally, and probably most importantly, the members enjoy a raffle and the opportunity for a good natter over an afternoon tea of sandwiches and homemade cakes.

Social butterflies

Each year Forget Me Not members enjoy two trips out. At the beginning of June, the Club enjoyed a coach trip to Millets Farm Centre in Abingdon followed by afternoon tea at The Ferryman Inn in Witney. For the last two years, this trip has been generously funded by Sweet Charity.

The Club’s next outing will be a half day ‘mystery trip’ on 1st September. In 2014, the members found themselves at Court Garden by the river in Marlow for afternoon tea.

At Christmas, club members also enjoy a wonderful Christmas lunch with all the trimmings provided by a lady who lives in the village.

Funding and donations

In addition to nominal member fees, the Forget Me Not Club holds two sales in spring and autumn at Prestwood Village Hall to help fund its activities. Along with a tea and cake offering, stalls include homemade cakes, pottery, jewellery, gifts and a raffle.

For the monthly meeting raffle, prizes are donated by the members of the Club and on special occasions by the local community.

‘Not Forgetting’ the volunteers

A dedicated team of 18 volunteers and 9 committee members assist in running the Club. Since July 2014, the team has been led by the Chairman, Christine Davy. Christine succeeded Joan Palmer after 13 successful years as Chairman.

The Forget Me Not Club is always on the lookout for volunteers. Sadly, Peggy the Secretary will be retiring shortly so if you are a whizz on the computer and a great organiser then please get in touch via the contact details below.
