Spirit of Christmas 2018

For the past eleven years, the Spirit of Christmas event (which has been consistently supported by Great Missenden Parish Council) has become the Prestwood village way of starting the Christmas season.

However, as the attendances have grown, so have the problems of ensuring that it remains a safe event for those who attend; this has been paramount in all our planning. Last year we tried a different location. This year it was decided to revert to the original location and create a larger and safer spectator area. To do this involved closing the High Street/Wycombe Road and other roads to traffic for a couple of hours so that the area around the Chequers Parade would remain clear.

Our team leader in this project did great work in securing the aid and support of a professional traffic management company to achieve efficient road closures and various diversion plans. Chiltern District Council (as is required) also became involved, and in mid-November raised some matters with us that we needed to satisfy. These were both procedural and technical in nature.

These requirements in themselves were not unreasonable, and ordinarily most would not have posed a problem to resolve, given more time. However, we did not feel that we had enough time to respond with our protocols and solutions to the matters raised, and then have them approved before the 1st December, the Spirit of Christmas. It was an inadvertent situation caused purely by accidents of timing and resources.

As a consequence, rather than falling foul of safety and environmental regulations, it is with the deepest regret that we have taken the decision to cancel the Spirit of Christmas event this year.

Please also note that there will be no lighting ceremony on the 1st December.

We sincerely apologise for this, and for any disappointment caused.
