Inside a specially constructed tent the size of a football pitch, archaeologists working on behalf of HS2, are currently excavating the remains of the former parish church of St. Mary the Virgin in Stoke Mandeville. This is a once in a generation opportunity to excavate the ruins of a medieval church and churchyard.
St. Mary’s Field Museum is open to the public on the weekend of 29th and 30th May, although places for these dates have already sold out. However, more opening dates are planned throughout the summer. Details will be posted on www.hs2inbucksandox.co.uk, where you can register to receive email updates about the HS2 project.
Inside the museum you can ascend the viewing platform for a bird’s eye view of ongoing excavations, as well as viewing displays, films and interactives to explore the history of St. Mary’s church and the amazing archaeological discoveries in the surrounding area.
